Kaija: No, it’s just cold and not pleasant.

Emil: Are you saying this? That’s weird…

Emil: Are you not a real northerner?

Kaija: Yes [negative] I am.

Čilgehusat / Explanations

1 - leat is the 2nd person (you form) singular of the verb leat, meaning to be,

2 - ля̄ is the 1st person singular of the verb лӣйе, meaning to be. Its basic conjugations will be provided later in the lesson

3 - Луяввьр (Lujavv’r) is the Sámi name for the town of Lovozero. In the text you see Луяввра being used which is the illative case (grammatical cases will be further explained in the next lesson) of Луяввьр. Think of the illative case as marking a destination just as the English preposition to does

4 - The particle гэ marks a question and is placed after the verb the question relates to

5 - When there are multiple verbs in a sentence relating to each other, the verbs following the first one will be in the infinitive form. For example: I want to eat (Та̄та по̄ррэ), in English, to marks the infinitive form, in Kildin Sámi, the infinitive is a separate form and the one you will find in dictionaries, the infinitive of all verbs will be provided in this course.

6 - эйй is the verb of negation, we will learn more about it in the following lessons, for now think of it as the word no in English

7 - мэ̄ннэпь is the 1st person plural of the verb мэ̄ннэ
